Looking for Grubs

A property manager asks if we can check some condos for grubs.

-------------------------------------

Hi 

Okay will take a look for grubs as part of your lawn care package

Not always able to tell conclusively as the grubs are under the sod

If skunks or raccoons find them it is easy to see where they have been digging

If there are dead patches, we can check those easily.

There may be areas that are green and do not appear to have grubs, but the grubs are there underneath. If the animals find them 2 days later - they are better at finding them than humans.

We will inspect- but if we find no evidence,  we will not say that there are no grubs, 

We will say that we didn't find any.

Haven't developed X ray vision yet and it is not practical to dig up every piece of lawn.

Lawn Questions

Hi Pam (asking about her weedy lawn- not cared for in 5 years)

Hopefully you recognize that these days the weed treatment is not as good as it used to before the Ban.

the Weed product used Iron to knock back the weeds. The tops of some weeds will turn black very soon, Some tops will die off, some will only be affected around the edges, some will resist the treatment.

Since the roots are not always affected, the plant will regrow from the roots. Several applications will be needed. 

It is therefore also important to (while the weeds are down) to nourish the grass by feeding it to become thicker and more dense. 

Fixing the lawn is not an quick fix these days. It will take time. It is a process that you have to be willing to invest in over a couple of years at least.

We would normally recommend at least 3 high quality fertilizations per year.

Having said that though, there is new fertilizer technology that will allow us to apply an All year fertilizer that releases slowly over the whole year. One application will give the equivalent of the 3-4 fertilizers. The product is more expensive, and is applied heavier, but you save on the labour costs.

Crabgrass- usually grows in sunny spots where the grass is weaker. Fall is a good time to thicken up any weak areas by seeding the lawn.

What is this Weed in my lawn?

This weed is called Prostrate or creeping spurge (Euphorbia supina)

Generally this weed is not a problem in healthy lawns. It likes warm soils. So if it is growing in a lawn - the lawn is likely a weak area.

In some ways, prostrate spurge is what we call an "Indicator Plant." It tells us to look beyond the presence of the weed and look at other issues that have allowed this weed to grow.

So this can be found for instance, along the edge of the lawn, say next to a driveway where once in a while the tires roll on the lawn. Or the trimmer clips the grass too short there. 

Or it is most often found in sunny lawn areas that are thin. In thick healthy lawns, one does not usually find this weed.

The next thing to determining why the lawn is thin in that area. Often there may have been chinch bugs or grubs damaging the lawn. A damaged lawn will allow weeds such as prostrate spurge to grow.

Controls. Creeping weeds are difficult to control with the current lawn care weed products that are  permitted in Ontario. A treatment or two will help.

But the important thing is to thicken up the lawn where the spurge is growing.

September is the best time of year to add seed to the lawn.

There are several ways to seed the lawn

- adding soil and seed

- aeration followed by seeding

I just spoke with you this morning and am sending along a picture of the weed that is growing in my parents lot. I'm curious if you know what it is and if there is a spray that you can put on all of the grass and it will only treat this type of weed.

Does aeration make a difference?

Ask any lawn care professional if aerations are important and nine times or more out of ten, they are going to tell you how good it so for the lawn,

It helps loosen soil, it allows the soil to breathe, it enhances water penetration, increases nutrient absorption, etc, etc, blah, blah.

Yet in a relatively healthy lawn, it is often difficult to see any difference to the lawn after an aeration has been performed.

Well, today, I was on a lawn where you could see the difference.

I was evaluating the lawn for a potential customer. The lawn she said was aerated this spring and her husband had applied a fertilizer then as well.

Looking at the front lawn, she asked why are there little tufts of grass here and there that are growing higher than the rest of the lawn.

When I looked at the lawn closely, these little clusters of grass were indeed growing better than the surrounding lawn. The tufts were about 2 inched across. And they were spaced rather evenly in the lawn. Some in a straight line 9-10 inches apart,

My conclusion is that where the lawn had been aerated, the grass was doing better than the lawn in the areas between the aeration holes. But, because the lawn was so compacted and the soil was so poor that the effect of the aeration only manifested itself on a small area near the piece of grass that was aerated.

Unfortunately I didn't stop to take a photo at that time.

In this case another aeration should be done this fall to continue the good work that has started in albeit some small areas of the lawn
