Comparison Photos

Visited our son yesterday, (he has a program with Turf King)
The neighbour has another company. I know I have see their sign several times when I drop in to see the grandchildren. So it is not as if they have not had any lawn care services.

Yes, I'll get after him to trim a little nicer, but the colour is so much superior when you use a good fertilizer product, applied professionally and properly.
I'd say the dogs have done a better job of greening up the other lawn than their lawn care company.

Dogs Spots on the Boulevard

Dogs Spots on the Boulevard
Your neighbourhood dog walkers may be diligent in picking up and taking away the doggie doodoo, but they are often less careful where they let the dogs do their No. 1's.
The urea in dog urine will act as a lawn nutrient on the lawn. If your lawn in not well nourished, the lawn will appear spotty.

Cure? Keep your lawn well fed. That way the dog spots will not be as noticeable.

Over the Phone Diagnosis

Lou sign up as a new Turf King customer for 2010. Chris lives down the street. Lou's lawn was greatly improved by the lawn care program.
Chris moved in a year and a half ago, but the lawn just didn't want to measure up, in spite of tender loving care, seeding and watering. Lou recommend a call to Turf King.
Chris called and described the situation on the lawn. "It's patchy, and bare, the seed didn't grow." A few questions to pinpoint the time of year that the problems started. Doesn't sound like an insect problem. They tend to occur within certain time periods that correspond with their life cycles.

Sounds like you have Necrotic Ring Spot- a lawn disease. Sure enough, once at the site, the spots and patchiness were very typical of this particular disease.

Call Turf King for your problem lawns. We have the experience and we can help.

Crabgrass Menace

# weed control Crabgrass is up and affecting lawns. Lighter green foliage that does not blend well with the darker greens of desirable lawn grasses is one reason people feel crabgrass is a weed. Here we see crabgrass sprouting in a lawn.

Crabgrass likes warm soil. Most often it is found along the edges of the lawn -especially where the grass abuts concrete or asphalt walks or driveways. The hard surfaces hold the heat and transfer the warmth to the soil nearby. Coupled with the fact that the lawn tends to be weaker at the edges, makes these spots ideal for crabgrass to grow.

In this lawn, one may think that crabgrass is the problem. In reality, the crabgrass growing here is a symptom of a weak lawn. This patch of crabgrass is in a sunny, open location. Yes, that is the type of situation that crabgrass likes. But, I believe crabgrass is here because the lawn is weak. I don't believe the lawn is poor because of the crabgrass.

Sure enough, there were a number of chinch bug nymphs crawling through this area.(not the best photo, but they don't stop to pose, no matter how politely you ask). Not a lot yet, but much of the damage was from last year. This year the nymphs are just starting. My point is that this area was damaged by chinch bugs in the past, which weakened the lawn, which allowed the crabgrass to invade.

To reduce the risk of crabgrass, do protect your lawn from pests. Then do those things to keep your lawn healthy and dense- regular quality fertilizations, overseeding as needed. Also proper mowing and watering. For crabgrass, a mowing height of 3" is important. The longer grass blades will shade the soil and keep it cooler. This will favour desirable turfgrasses and discourage crabgrass.

FERTILIZER AN INTEGRAL PART OF ‘HOLISTIC’ LAWN CARE

FERTILIZER AN INTEGRAL PART OF ‘HOLISTIC’ LAWN CARE

There is a growing movement among turf care professionals that stresses the necessity of providing ideal growing and maintenance conditions.  This promotes healthy strong growth rather than treating problems that occur due to stressed or poorly maintained lawns.

By fertilizing your lawn regularly, you are providing the turf roots with a continual supply of essential nutrients necessary for healthy plant growth.  Research has proven that healthy lawns are better able to fight off insect and disease infestation, as well as out-compete weeds.

Other practices to encourage healthy growth include using correct watering practices, timing mowing properly so not too much grass is removed at one time and aerating lawns annually to restore compacted soil.

FERTILIZER FACTS

FERTILIZER FACTSPrintE-mail
FERTILIZER FACTS
No matter what the source of fertilizer – be it natural, ‘organic’, synthetic, mineral, or processed – the nutrients and their resulting benefit to the plants are all the same.
Following are the three key ingredients in fertilizer formulations.  These major elements are needed by all plants for healthy growth.
Nitrogen:  produces green top growth, aids the ability to recover from damage and stress (heat, cold, drought).
Phosphorous:  promotes good root growth and is a vital ingredient in the plant’s metabolic process.  It is also necessary for seed development.
Potassium:  essential for the growth and development of the plant cells.  Also promotes increased tolerance to foot traffic.
The next three nutrients are known as minor elements and are needed in minute quantities.  But their presence is essential for vital plant functions.
Calcium is a structural element that is also necessary for cell division and plant growth.  Lawns that are calcium deficient are susceptible to disease.
Magnesium is an essential element in the photosynthetic process that allows green leaves to turn carbon dioxide and sunlight into sugar and oxygen.
Sulfur is needed to help plant utilize nitrogen.  It also functions to increase the cold tolerance of lawns.  A lack of sulfur results in stunted growth and may increase the occurrence of fungal disease.
Regular proper feedings can ensure that your lawn has all the nutrients it needs. Soil Testing may also be a means of determining soil nutrient levels and possible deficiencies.
Lawn Care for the well informed.

BENEFITS of NATURAL ORGANIC FERTILIZER

Organic matter is derived from the decomposition of plant and animal residues such as harvested agricultural crops; plant vegetation like grass clippings and leaves; animal manures; or even human food residues such as garbage.  Organic decomposition, carried out by billions of micro-organisms, is all part of nature’s own recycling process.

The result of decomposition is humus, the primary component of soil organic matter.  Humus is a rich source of essential nutrients.  The nutrients are made available slowly as required by plants for vigorous growth, without loss or wastage into the environment.  Humus also contributes to soil quality by improving its physical structure, and its water and nutrient holding capacity.

Soil biological activity requires humus to continue the process of decomposition and recycling of valuable nutrients.  When soil is biologically healthy, it also contributes to the suppression of plant and soil disease.

Because organic matter (humus) is consumed during the growing season to produce lawns, gardens, landscaping and agricultural crops, it must be systematically renewed, hence, the reason for natural organic fertilizers.

Organic matter cannot be manufactured synthetically. Synthesized fertilizers supply nutrients. Organic fertilizers not only supply nutrients, they benefit the soil.

The benefits from natural organic fertilizers in plant response are greater than its value in terms of plant nutrients alone.  Long term effects on soil fertility, physical conditions and soil biology account for the added value attributed to the organic matter.

Bent Grass Woes

Bentgrass is not the grass of choice for a home lawn. Golf courses love it for the putting greens because it tolerates being cut short. But bentgrass needs a lot of extra care. It loves to be pampered with extra fertilizer and a lot of watering.
Bentgrass grows in the wild and birds can bring along a few seeds and drop them in your yard. Once started, bentgrass will sprout and spread. The other problem with bentgrass is that a short stem that is cut when mowing, can land in the lawn elsewhere and take hold, form roots and grow. So you can be spreading bentgrass to uninfected parts of your lawn when mowing.
Bentgrass has short shallow roots. This means it tends to dry out easily in drought conditions. On home lawns, people are unhappy that their lawn is yellow or brown in the summer. In dry weather, the shallow roots are just not enough to keep bentgrass green. Unfortunately, it is hardy enough to go dormant in dry conditions, but not weak enough to die out. Once the cooler fall weather comes with more moisture, bentgrass will revive and turn green again.
Bentgrass with its shallow roots will sometimes form a thick mat. The stems of bentgrass often grow on the surface. As they spread out, they will sprout small roots. But the stems will smother other lawn grasses. Bentgrass is a vigorous growing plant and can easily outgrow other turf grasses.
Bentgrass is a weak grass and is often slow to green up in the spring. Bentgrass is often subject to winterkill and you lawn can have large patches of yellow grass that hasn't greened up. Again, the best scenario would be for it to have really died. Unfortunately, it will eventually turn green and live to take over more lawn than before.

Sometimes, once the bentgrass has turned brown, a little tug of a rake will lift the stems and the shallow roots up and leave a large bare patch.
How can one deal with bentgrass. There isn't a product that can be applied to the lawn to selectively control bentgrass.

The best one can do is to rake the bentgrass hard to remove as much of the stems and roots as possible. Then rake the soil to loosen it, add good quality grass seed and then keep moist.

I wish I could say this would do the trick for the lawn. Bentgrasss is very prolific and very vigorous and will likely be back. But this is often a better, less expensive solution than ripping out the whole lawn and resodding.

Fall Lawns Look Great

Posted by Picasa
Fall is a great time for lawns. The flower gardens have grown to their fullest extent and add a bright and cheery spot of colour. The lawns themselves are enjoying the cooler night time temperatures. The soil is cooler so grass roots are able to grow and take up nutrients and moisture easily.

And if your lawn is not looking as good as you like, fall is a excellent season to start the process to a better lawn next year. A lawn program with a top quality lawn fertilizer is an important key to improving your lawn. A fertilizer that is slow release will feed the lawn slowly- a little at a time. Less expensive (cheap) fertilizers are like expecting your lawn to live off a Thanksgiving feast for the next two months. Better fertilizers don't feed the lawn with a lot of nutrients all at once. They dole the nutrients out a little at a time, just as it is needed. This also helps the environment. If the turf is unable to use the nutrients, they will either get washed away or will leach down below the reach of the grass roots. By using slow release fertilizer, nutrients are not wasted.

Turf King currently uses a 75% slow release fertilizer. The components in our fertilizer will feed the lawn for up to 16 weeks or longer. The organic components take even longer for all of their nutrients to release. Organic fertilizers continue to feed plants over a much longer period of time.
Lawns that receive high quality fertilizers, will keep their green colour and remain healthier and thicker than lawns that receive lower quality fertilizers.
